Longing

I have never seen her face smile in sleep
As it is gently bathed in morning light;
But I have seen the sun rise on a new day,
A red and golden ending of the night.

I have never held her hand in the street,
Strolled side-by-side; matched her footsteps to mine.
But I have walked local paths, head held high,
Faced forwards, looked the world straight in the eye.

I have never longed for her return from work,
Sat tensed, counting each second passing by,
But I have oft waited with baited breath,
To see promises honoured, dreams not denied .

I have never caught her scent on my pillow,
Or lying naked, wrapped my arms around her,
In loving embrace. But I have been held,
Tight and tenderly, in the Everlasting Arms.

I have never known Christ to let me down,
Nor turn away numb to my fear to be
Through Him, I have seen Hope’s Wings unfurl,
What seems impossible – is possible for me.
